About Sublette County
Outdoor Paradise
Popular activities in Sublette County include fishing and river floating on the lakes and rivers of the Wyoming Range and, especially, the Wind River Mountains, a spectacular section of the Rocky Mountain chain. World famous Jackson Hole is just 78 miles to the north. The traditional economy of hunting and fishing-based tourism is supplemented by activities from the oil and gas drilling in the famous Jonah Field. This place is booming and is reputed to be a boom town for the next thirty years. Separate towns have their own character. Some are genuine cowboy towns and will stay that way forever. Others are growing with the influx of city folk. Views of mountain ranges are to be enjoyed from almost any property. The mountains are so high, you cannot hide from them.
Quality of country life (exemplified by the following superlatives)
• No stop lights in the entire county.
• 100 miles from the nearest railroad.
• 78 miles from the nearest McDonalds.
• The elevation of every town is greater than its population.
• Only one Australian lives here full time.
Typical year in Sublette County
In January and February we have snowmobile and dog sled races. It is the best time of year to go ice fishing. High school boys and girls basketball; boys swimming begins.
When March rolls in the Sublette County Ski and Snow club sponsors the annual Caroline Classic invitational fun race and the Pinedale Boat Club has its annual fishing derby on Lake Fremont.
April is a great time to get out and do some fishing, also the Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course opens up for the season. High school track is in full swing!
Come May the lakes are being fished in as more people are boating and having BBQ’s and the local high school is having its rodeo. It is getting warmer by the day and people are already hiking, biking, and camping out.
As June approaches summer is really kicking, people are swimming in the lakes, water skiing, having picnics at the lakes or at the parks. There is a lot of tourism in our little town especially in the summer as we are a popular stop along the route to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone.
Every year in July we host the annual “Rendezvous Days” festival that features live entertainment, public BBQ’s, lots of shopping as there will be out door booths all the way up and down Pine street with people selling crafts, antiques and other goodies. There is a lively parade, a rodeo and much much more. Summer is always action packed with activities for kids, there is a fun filled summer camp for kids just 10 minutes away from the main street that takes your children camping, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, and all reasonably priced.
August is warm and bright in Pinedale, although there are occasional late summer storms bringing light rain and maybe some lightening storms. This is when the Sublette County Fair comes to town, Fremont Lake hosts a Sailing Regatta, the Cowboy Shop has the “Classic Rodeo,” we have the Pinedale Blues Festival, & golf tournaments.
September comes along it is still warm but not as intense as previous summer months, hiking and biking becomes more pleasant, kids go back to school and best of all hunting season opens. High school football, volleyball & girls swimming begins.
October is when we typically get our first snow dustings that quickly melt. The leaves have changed and our mountains start to get covered in white. The town is busy preparing for Halloween there are pumpkins and spooky decorations put on display.
In November there are fundraisers (to help out local students) at rendezvous point and other seasonal county banquets are held, we have our annual thanksgiving turkey trot, and best of all the snow is finally on the ground and so we get to start playing real winter games again!!! This is when we get to go ice-fishing, ice hockey, snow machining, skiing, sledding and have snowball fights. Best of all this is when our local ski resort opens for the season!
In December we have our annual Christmas parade of lights down our main-street (west pine). On New Year’s Eve we have a Parade of Torches at our local ski lodge. Alpine and Nordic skiing begins!
The changing of the seasons in Pinedale is actively celebrated with excitement and enthusiasm by its local people, as there is a lot of warmth and promise of good things to come here and great potential for this to be your own “boom town.”
